In this unit, you have learnt that: • The urethra as a tube that exits the urinary bladder inferiorly and anteriorly. In males, the urethra extends to the end of the penis. In females, it opens into the vestibule anterior to the vaginal opening. • The male urethra has 3 parts - prostatic, membranous and penile urethra.

The formation of simple organic compounds is explained by using the concept of hybridization. As these organic compounds are conveniently studied by grouping the similar compounds together in a class, classification of organic compounds has been dealt with in detail. The nomenclature of various classes of the organic compounds is also discussed using simple examples.

How were cells discovered? The first description of the cell is generally attributed to Robert Hooke (1635 1702), an English physicist who was also a distinguished microscopist. In 1665 Hooke published Micrographia, the first important work devoted to microscopical observation, and showed what the microscope could mean for naturalists. He described the microscopic units that made up the structure of a slice of cork and coined the term ‘‘cells’’ or ‘‘pores’’ to refer to these units.
